Add an extension

Create a new extension on your system. A voicemail box is automatically created for each extension.

Before you begin: You must have admin permissions.

There are two different types of extensions you can add to your account.
  • Department extensions: Department extensions are single-digit extensions. The extension numbers used for department extensions are 0-6. Employee extensions start with 7, the name directory is 8, and 9 is for callers to repeat the main greeting.
  • Employee extensions: Employee extensions are 3-digit extensions beginning with the number 7.
  1. Sign in to the admin portal.
  2. Select Extensions and then select Add extension next to Department Extensions or Employee Extensions.
    Attention: Depending on your plan, adding an extension may add a fee to your monthly or annual bill. If you'd still like to add the extension, review the additional cost and then select Yes, add this extension to my account. Otherwise, select Cancel or Do NOT add this extension.

    Result: The new extension will be added to the bottom of the list.

  3. By default, your contact phone number (the phone number used when you created your account) is automatically enabled for call forwarding on the new extension. The default setting for How should Grasshopper handle calls to this number? will be Calls will connect to you as soon as you pick up. Learn how to change the call forwarding settings.
What to do next: While multiple numbers can be added to the same account, you only have one set of extensions. You can have main greetings for each of your numbers with different messages.

  1. Sign in to the admin portal.
  2. Go to Call management > Extensions.
  3. Select Add new extension.
    Attention: Depending on your plan, adding an extension may add a fee to your monthly or annual bill. If you'd still like to add the extension, review the additional cost and then select Yes, add this extension to my account. Otherwise, select Cancel or Do NOT add this extension.

    Result: The new extension will be added to the bottom of the list, on the last page.

What to do next:
  • Use your new extension by forwarding calls to a phone number to the new extension, or add the extension to your welcome greeting if using the phone menu from the phone number.
