Set up an instant response text on a phone number

Attention: Carriers are now blocking all unregistered outbound SMS per industry regulations to combat spam. Registration is mandatory for all providers, not just Grasshopper. Register now to restore or maintain SMS service. Grasshopper cannot expedite carrier reviews.

Set up instant response to send automatic text messages in response to missed calls. The instant response messages have a 160-character maximum.

Before you begin:
  • Users must be admins to set up and use instant response.
  • SMS texting must be enabled as an add-on to use instant response.
  • You must have completed registration on your phone number to enable texting.
About this task: Instant response messages will not be sent for the following reasons:
  • Callers who leave a voicemail.
  • Callers who hang up before selecting an extension

Legacy admin portal

If your admin portal home page looks like the screenshot below, these steps are for you.Legacy admin portal home page

  1. Sign in to the admin portal.
  2. Go to Settings > Instant Response.
  3. Enable the toggle next to the desired phone number.
  4. To modify the instant response message, select Edit and then make the desired changes.
  5. Select Save.
  6. From Preferences, select the desired recipient type:
    1. First-time callers — This is the default setting.
    2. All callers — The instant response will only be sent once per caller per day, regardless if multiple calls are made to the same Grasshopper number from the same caller.
  7. Optional: Select Apply To All to use the new message for all phone numbers.

Admin portal

If your admin portal home page looks like the screenshot below, these steps are for you.Admin portal home page

  1. Sign in to the admin portal.
  2. Go to Text management > Instant response.
  3. Select the desired phone number and then enable the toggle for Send instant response.
  4. Enter your instant response message.
  5. Choose which missed calls will receive an instant response.
  6. Optional: Select Apply to all numbers to use the message and preferences for all phone numbers.
  7. Select Save.

Desktop app

  1. From the desktop app, select the settings gear in the top right.
  2. Select Instant Response.
  3. Enable the toggle next to the desired phone number.
  4. To modify the instant response message, select Edit and then make the desired changes.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Optional: Select Apply To All to use the new message for all the phone numbers.

Mobile app

  1. From the mobile app, select Settings from the bottom right.
  2. Select Instant Response.
  3. Choose the phone number you want to set up and then select Edit.
  4. Enter your new instant response message and then select Save.
  5. Optional: Select Apply To All to use the new message for all phone numbers.
